… certainly does love books!
Hay is a charming town that lies on the bank of the River Wye, on the Welsh side of the border with England. Despite its population of 2,000 residents, it has become the world’s largest centre for second-hand and antique books.
Described as “The Town of Books“, Hay is visited by literature enthusiasts throughout the seasons whereas the Hay Festival of Literature & Arts brings together readers, writers, publishers, philosophers, musicians.

So how did it all begin?
This small town owes its popularity to Richard Booth, known as the “king of Hay“, who was the first to open a bookshop selling used books in 1962 (Richard Booth’s Bookshop). Over time business bloomed, so numerous other shops and stands started popping up selling second-hand and antique books. That is how books became to be Hay’s trademark.
Famous bookshops
Hay is home to more than 30 small but lovely and authentic bookshops for book enthusiasts to explore. Some of them specialise in literary genres such as children’s literature, crime fiction, science fiction, poetry, etc. Richard Booth’s bookshop is among the most popular; it extends in a three-storey building, with cosy reading corners, a cinema and a busy café.

In an outdoors location, “The Honesty Bookshop” uniquely features selling books for £1 or less, without the presence of cashiers; buyers are expected to deposit the money in the intended box should they decide to purchase a book. No surveillance or security cameras; it is operating upon cultivating trust!
Hay Castle
Should you find yourself in “The Honesty Bookshop” make sure you pay the Castle a visit as well! The remarkable fairy-tale Hay Castle dates back to the 12th century. Throughout its existence it has suffered attacks, damages and fires; the look it has today was established around the 17th century. Visitors can walk around the gallery, classroom and reception hall and once the latest renovation is completed, a new bookstore, reading room and café will be a delightful addition for the public.

Hay Festival of Literature & Arts
The popular Hay Festival of Literature & Arts is held annually around the end of May. During the 10-day celebrations, several different events are taking place, with the participation of well-known personalities from the arts, media and politics. Book lovers from all over the world join the festival with the intention of talking to writers, getting signed copies, attending to book promotions and, all in all, treating themselves to their favourite works of literature!
